Helen Georgia hiking

In the mountains of Georgia, close to Chattanooga and the Tennessee border is a little town called Helen. It is another spot most travelers will miss if they are not looking for it. Nestled in the Appalachian mountains. This quaint little town is modeled in every respect to remind visitors of an old German mountain village.

Hikers traveling the Appalachian Trail know it is there. It’s one of the first places to stop, get a real meal, resupply and rest before resuming the long hiking through to Maine. The town has a frontier-style general store that carries everything the hiking or the visitor out for a day’s excursion could want. If hiking and nature are not your inclination however, you might not know of this little town’s existence, which is a shame.

With all the vacationers traveling to Chattanooga every year to visit  the resorts and amusement parks, this beautiful little town is a gem that is seldom seen. It lies along the Chattahoochee River, which flows beside its main street for the entire length of the town.

The buildings are all designed to match the style of architecture associated with the Bavarian Alps, and the town is full of gift shops and German restaurants. If your inclination is to try the best that German food has to offer or to enjoy some good old fashioned German beer, look no further than the Hofbrau House.

If Golf is your thing, three courses make the town a destination. If you are into other outdoor activities, the area offers access to white water rafting, fishing, hiking, camping and mountain biking.

The Alpine Antique Auto and Buggy Museum is a fun place to take the family, and Mom and Dad will enjoy a visit to the Habersham Winery. Perhaps on the quirky side, but fun for everybody: babies are delivered daily at Baby land General Hospital, the home of the  Cabbage Patch Kids.

Hand crafted quilts from Southern Comfort Quilts, and Pottery from The Willows Pottery make Nacoochee Village just south of town on Ga #75 a shopping experience to rival the glory days of Williamsburg, Virginia’s Pottery Factory. Hand blown glass can be seen  crafted in a little shop along Main Street as well.

Places to stay in Helen are as distinct as the rest of the town. Why not enjoy your own private stairway carved from the stone of the mountainside leading to the Chattahoochee River? Rent a cabin at A1 Vacation Renters and you can have exactly that. The Castle Inn, a Bavarian style building with magnificent views is located in the heart of Alpine Helen on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and has some pretty nice Mountain views. Enjoy the comfort of the rooms after a full day of trout fishing on the Chattahoochee River, the action packed family fun of Helen's Main Street attractions, or endless hours of browsing and shopping some of the most unique shops in the Georgia Mountains.

The next time you are thinking of going south for your vacation or looking to trade your resort package and do something new, why not look into accommodations in the neighborhood of Helen, GA. This wonderful little piece of the old world hidden away in the mountains of Georgia is worth a look.
